How do I check my laptop’s model & specs?
Table of Contents
Identification of the correct laptop model, series, series number, screen resolution, and screen size is important to find the proper part for your laptop. When you open your laptop, it will typically display the laptop series more prominently. The logo will usually be located on the top cover, the keyboard area, or the display panel. Nevertheless, model numbers on laptops can sometimes be difficult to locate. You can get help identifying your model and series by selecting the manufacturer of your laptop from the options below. Some manufacturers have both an item number and a serial number, which means that you will need both of these numbers to locate your part. The manufacturer may only require identifying the model series.
You’ll learn in this guide how to discover what kind of laptop you’re using, and what hardware’s inside of it.
Checking your laptop’s model and specs might be necessary for several reasons. Your old laptop might be compared to the one you would like to upgrade to. Maybe you’re looking to see if your laptop’s specs meet the requirements for a specific video game. Whatever the reason for doing so, it is relatively easy to locate the model and specifications of a laptop.
We take you to step by step through the process of finding your model number and specifications.

- Search for the control panel in the search box at the bottom of your screen.
- Choose the Control Panel app from the search results.
- Choose the first option in the drop-down box, “System and Security.”

Checking Your Laptop’s Specs
There are other ways to determine what CPU, GPU or RAM your computer has if you just need to know these specs.
Finding Your CPU
In Windows 10, it is very straightforward to find out your processor model.
- You can open a menu by right-clicking the Windows button in the upper-left corner.
- Under the middle section, you can find “System.”
- Near the bottom of the page, in “Device Specifications,” you should find the CPU your laptop has. It can be found next to the word “processor” here.
- Also, you can track your RAM size in the “Device Specifications” section.
Checking Your Motherboard
There will rarely be a need for you to know what kind of motherboard your laptop has. However, if you do, there is something that you can do in a few simple steps.
- You can find system statistics by typing “system info” into your browser’s search bar.
- Click on the “system information” app that shows up in the search results.
- An extensive list of information will appear. You’ll find the model number of your motherboard at the very bottom, which corresponds to the brand of the motherboard. Directly below that, you will find “Motherboard Model”, or “Motherboard Product” which will be your motherboard model number.
- To find out what CPU and GPU you have installed, along with how much memory you have, you can also use the System Information panel.
Checking Your GPU
Having a good GPU is essential for gaming. No matter if you’re assessing whether your laptop meets the criteria for a certain game, or you’re comparing it to another, you have to know what kind of GPU you have. You can find it here:
- Right-click the Windows icon on the bottom left; this will show you a few options.
- Click on the “Device Manager.”
- Now you’ll find a list of drop-down menus that contains a list of all of your devices on your computer, as well as any others that are connected through USBs or Bluetooth.
- You’ll see a menu that says “Display Adaptors” near the top. Click on it.
- This menu will mention your GPU, but there might be two options for it; one is the standalone GPU and another is the integrated GPU that comes on your CPU. If there are dual options, the standalone GPU should be on the top of the list.
Checking How Much RAM You Have
The methods mentioned above will also help you find out how much RAM your system has. However, you can also use a method other than those listed above for finding out how much RAM you have:
- Start by right-clicking on the bottom button on your computer screen.
- Choose the system option from the drop-down menu that appears.
- Your computer will now be on the “about” page. On the left side of that page, you’ll see “Device Specifications” with your RAM’s number. Typically, this is listed as “installed RAM.”
