4 Ways to Find out Which Motherboard Do You Have? (How Can I Tell Quickly)

It’s fine if you don’t open the computer case beneath your desk with its mounds of wires. Sometimes it’s necessary to figure out exactly what kind of motherboard your PC is running on.

It’s surprising that you would have to search for it, for it to be so hard to find. Or, you wouldn’t even know where to look. Hope we can help.

However, determining the motherboard type that you use is not so straightforward.

We have provided several options for finding out what kind of motherboard is inside your computer here in this post—each one with detailed instructions.

Method 1: Check ‘System Information’

If there’s a motherboard on your computer, you can look it up in the System Information menu. Here’s how to do it:

1. Type ‘System Information’ in the Windows search bar.
2. You can find ‘Motherboard Manufacturer’ or ‘BaseBoard Manufacturer’ on the left side of the System Summary tab (opens on the left side of the window).
3. There should be information beside ‘Motherboard/BaseBoard Manufacturer’, ‘Motherboard/BaseBoard Model’, and ‘Motherboard/BaseBoard Name’ that includes the information you’re looking for.

This method seems like it would be the easiest way to find out what motherboard you have, but it can be hit or miss.

The manufacturer of your motherboard can at least be determined. However, the exact model number of your motherboard can’t be determined using this method.

I can see in the image above who manufactured my motherboard, but it does not tell me which exact model number I have.

Method 2:Use A Command Prompt

This method is probably best if you are comfortable running command prompts.

Follow these steps to find out what motherboard you have:

1. Type “cmd” in the search box of Windows and hit Enter.
2. In Command Prompt, type “wmic” baseboard get the product, Manufacturer
3. You will also see the name and model of your motherboard displayed.

The provided prompt should be typed exactly as shown for the method to work correctly.

Method 3:Open Your Computer and Check Your Motherboard

The other way to quickly check your motherboard is to open your computer up and look for the model number and manufacturer on the motherboard itself.

Open Your Computer and Check Your Motherboard

In order to locate the motherboard’s model name, locate the manufacturer’s logo on the motherboard, which will be a four-digit code beginning with a letter followed by three numbers.

here have a Z370 chipset motherboard in the image above, and those four digits indicate that ASUS built it. If you can find anything similar to that string of digits, you will know what chipset the motherboard is built on, and its model number.

Method 4: Use Third-Party Software

Other options include downloading third-party software displaying your motherboard’s manufacturer and model number.

CPU-Z, Belarc Advisor, and Speccy will both tell you what motherboard you have on your computer. The premium version of Speccy, however, is $19.95 and will reveal what motherboard you have.
