How to Check How Much VRAM have in you Computer or Laptop

VRAM is a unique type of RAM (Random Access Memory) that is used on graphics processing units for computers. A dedicated graphics card for your computer has its own RAM away from the RAM of your computer, which is reserved for memory functions having to do with display and graphics. Each graphics card has a different amount of video memory (VRAM). A good rule of thumb is that the more VRAM a graphics card possesses, the better because a graphics card with more VRAM can perform more graphics and display operations simultaneously.

Video RAM capacity is a big factor in deciding how good a graphics card is, so almost all computer users who have a dedicated graphics card are interested in video RAM. It’s easy as it gets on Windows 10, even the latest and best version of the operating system. The first way to check how much VRAM your computer has is a very straightforward process involving nothing more than the built-in system utilities, while the other way uses a third-party application that can do a lot more than just tell you how much VRAM it has. A Windows 10 computer’s VRAM can be determined by one of the following methods:

If you don’t know your GPU, then you would have to Google it, so here’s how to find your VRAM on Windows 10.

Method 1: Using Display settings

You can find out how much VRAM your computer has by going into Display settings and provided you know exactly where to look next. The method to determine how much video memory is in your graphics card is as follows:

  1. You can open the Start Menu by pressing the Windows Logo key on your keyboard.
  2. Just type display and hit Enter.
  3. Click on Display under the System section of the left side panel of the new window that opens.
  4. The Display adapter properties link will open a window containing detailed information about your display adapter . Your computer’s graphics card is also called the display adapter.
  5. In the Adapter Information tab, under Dedicated Video Memory, you will find the amount of VRAM your computer has according to your graphics card’s specifications.
  6. To close the Properties window, simply click OK after you have checked the video RAM in your computer.

Method 2: Using CPU-Z

Another third-party program called CPU-Z also helps Windows 10 users check exactly how much video RAM their computers have. In contrast, CPU-Z is able to do a lot more than simply display the amount of video memory a graphics card has – it can discover the exact model and version of a graphics card, down to its operating temperature and even when it was manufactured. In addition, CPU-Z does not limit itself to a computer graphics card – it also gets the scoop on everything else that matters, like the computer’s CPU, the RAM, and the cooling fans. In order to check your computer’s video RAM, you can use the CPU-Z tool:

  1. Download CPU-Z in the language of your choice (English or Chinese) that suits your computer’s hardware.
  2. Launch CPU-Z after you have installed it.
  3. Let CPU-Z detect your computer’s graphics card. If it does so, navigate to the Graphics tab and you will see all of the info it found on your GPU, alongside information regarding how much VRAM it has.

Method 3: Using DxDiag

A feature built into Windows that many people are not aware of let you check your Computer’s specifications and learn more about your Computer. This tool is called DxDiag, it is a tool from Microsoft that offers detailed information about your video card and your sound card. For using this tool you need to follow the steps below:-

  1. Enter the “DxDiag” command without quotes in the dialogue box by holding down the Windows + R keys.
  2. On the top of the screen there is a Display tab. Here you will see the details of the graphics card you are using. The graphics card on this computer belongs to the Intel UHD Series. This is the default card included with Intel processors.
  3. You can then click ‘Ok’ to close the DxDiag window once you’ve finished finding out how much VRAM your computer has.

I hope that you will find this useful in checking your VRAM in Windows 10.

Windows 8

  1. Go to Control Panel.
  2. Display the options.
  3. Select the resolution of the screen.
  4. Choose Advanced Settings.
  5. A list of your available Video Memory will be displayed if the Adapter tab is not already selected.

Windows Vista and Windows 7

  1. Type Control Panel into the Windows key and press Enter.
  2. Then click the Adjust screen resolution link under Appearance and Personalization.
  3. Then click on Advanced Settings in the center of the screen.
  4. The properties of your video adapter should appear in a new window as in the image below.
  5. On the Adapter tab, the memory of your video card is displayed in the Dedicated Video Memory column (see image below).

Windows XP

  1. Click the desktop and choose Properties.
  2. Click on the Settings tab.
  3. Then click the Advanced button.
  4. Click on the Adapter tab.
  5. You can see how much memory you have next to Memory Size in your GPU’s properties.

macOS X

  1. To view information about your Mac, select About This Mac on your Mac’s Apple menu.
  2. You find details on your graphics card, including your amount of video memory, in the Graphics information section.

Linux

In order to find out what video memory your computer has, you should use the command-line utility lspci on a Linux system.

  1. First of all, run lspci without options to find out about all your PCI devices. The VGA-compatible controller line is the line you need.
  2. Keep track of the identifier at the beginning of the line. This identifier is the PCI device’s domain id, and it is used in the next step to get further details on the controller. In this sample, our VGA controller ID is 00:02.0.
  3. Run lspci again, with the -v and -s options. -v specifies that we want detailed information, and -s points out only the device 00:02.0. In this example, the domain ID is 00:02.0.
  4. In the output of this command, you should see a line that indicates prefetchable memory, typically the video RAM.
